WELCOME TO TURIROA
What a difference a year makes with beef, lamb, mutton and even wool prices improving dramatically with beef and lamb in particular at record levels. With a worldwide shortage of protein lets hope these prices stay around for a few years at least. Not to mention a cracking autumn for most of us with regular rain and warm growing conditions it sure is nice to have some positive news going forward.
The 2025 sale was one out of the box. With a huge crowd and record registrations we were thrilled to get a full clearance and sell seven bulls to stud with a top of $40,000 to Pine Park Angus. It was a record sale average for us of $16,898.00 and we certainly realise that bulls are a significant investment. A huge thankyou to purchasers, agents and underbidders who helped to make the day a success.
We are excited to say that this year we will be first up on Sunday 21st of June at 10am. Having been the last sale for 80 odd years we decided it was time for a change. We will present 60 bulls with that deep, grunty look about them with quality right through the catalogue and are very pleased with the evenness of the line up.
It is very pleasing to see our genetics performing so well in Australia with Turiroa Hank 20R439 sons selling to $40,500 and having the leading sire average of $14,500 at Mordallup Angus in WA. These bulls were only 12months of age at the time of sale. We will have a good number of Hank sons next year! Also, Turiroa Complete 18P250 sons sold well recently at Jade Park Angus in North East Victoria. Complete will also have more sons here next year.
As we do every year the cow herd is heavily scrutinised with this year seeing the introduction of hip height and body condition score recording with EBV’s on this following soon. Our motto of ”cows that stay and steers that pay“ is always at the forefront of our decision making. With weaners making up to $7-8 a kg ,a 20-30 kg lift in your weaning weight is $150-200 a head at 6-8 months of age. Let along capturing value later in the animal’s life. This is a significant profit driver on farm!
All calves born at Turiroa are HD50K tested for genomically enhanced EBV’s. This is a costly investment, but we are committed to providing you with the most up to date technology mixed with a bit of good old fashioned stockmanship.
This year’s lineup have been run in mobs of 35 up until March. We are committed to presenting the bulls in good forward order without being overdone. We are really pleased with this year’s lineup and how the bulls have been progressing. We have really targeted that deep, thick, easydoing type and we are really starting to see it coming through now.
We have another very good lineup of “Avenger “sons with up to 18 catalogued. The Avengers were hugely sought after last year and this year’s sons are looking just as promising. They can’t be beaten for natural thickness, width, consistancy and excellent breed type. We have used four sons in the stud to carry on this excellent bloodline. The females are deep, wide and moderate framed and set to have a big influence on our herd in years to come.
First sons of Turiroa Trooper 22T681 who was used as a yearling will impress for size and growth yet still retaining the deep middle and width of loin we strive for.
Old campaigners Kaharau Furnace and Turiroa Nitro have their last crop of sons on offer and we have a few Turiroa Completes and Black Ridge R50 sons that will catch the eye.
Two new Aussie bulls will make an appearance with MM Rembrandt R48 (sold for $240,000) and MM Rector R53. A sampling of sons this year with more to come in the future. These two bulls have left the type we require and kicked our carcass data along. It’s a never-ending challenge trying to find bulls that tick our boxes for phenotype and structural soundness while having carcass data at the same time.
It’s great to get feedback that the bulls are performing out in the paddocks for a good number of years and the progeny are so even in type and hit the scales hard.
Videos of the sale bulls will be on the Turiroa Angus website by the end of May.
To offer flexibility to our clients we will again be incorporating BIDR into our on farm sale, allowing those who cannot make the sale to view and bid on line. However, we still recommend viewing the bulls prior to the sale.
With over 80 years of breeding behind us over this time our breeding philosophies have remained the same: to produce sound, functional, fertile and maternal cattle with constitution and excellent breed type. These cattle must have the ability to leave top class off-spring that can hit target markets and weights sooner. Our cow herd is the measuring parameter for do-ability, survivability and longevity. They also measure temperament, udder quality and feed efficiency. The top profit drivers for beef cattle enterprises that you can control to MAXIMISE the amount of beef produced on your property therefore adding VALUE along the way not just at slaughter are:
-
Stocking rate
-
Pregnancy test rate
-
Weaning rate
-
Weaning weight
-
Growth Rates
Our cattle have been selected for large scrotal size, produce vigorous calves that grow fast and dams that have superior udder and milking ability for generations. All Turiroa heifers are mated as yearlings.
We are excited to present this year’s team of very even, powerful sale bulls. We have not chased breeding fads or latest trends, instead using eye appraisal and stockmanship first then incorporating this with the raft of EBVs we have available today.
Sale Bulls are grass fed. We do not feed crops to any of our cattle. All bulls in this catalogue have been vet tested for penile soundness, palpated and morphology tested, BVD tested and vaccinated, 10 in1 vaccinated twice and are AMF, NHF, CAF and DDF pedigree free or tested free, TB status C10 and of course backed by our THREE year guarantee.
We are available anytime to discuss your bull requirements or let us know if you would like to come and view the bulls prior to the sale. Please get in touch if you would like help with finding accommodation in Wairoa as there are various BNB’s available that we can provide contact details for.
We look forward to catching up on Sunday 21st of June with the new start time of 10am. With viewing from 8.30am. The Webers will be hot and Nolans famous sea food chowder will still be on the menu!
